What is stainless steel?

Wikipedia gives a great explanation:

In metallurgy, stainless steel, also known as inox steel or inox from French “inoxydable”, is a steel alloy with a minimum of 10.5%[1] chromium content by mass.

Stainless steel does not readily corrode, rust or stain with water as ordinary steel does. However, it is not fully stain-proof in low-oxygen, high-salinity, or poor air-circulation environments.[2] There are different grades and surface finishes of stainless steel to suit the environment the alloy must endure. Stainless steel is used where both the properties of steel and corrosion resistance are required.

What type of stainless steel do you use?

For indoor purposes we use 304L stainless steel. However, coastal conditions require the usage of the tougher 316L grade.

A proper grade stainless steel is not magnetic. So if you’re uncertain about whether a stainless steel product is worth its salt, check it with a magnet. 304 and 316 will not respond.

I heard stainless steel requires no maintenance. Is it true?

It’s a common misconception that, if something is made with stainless steel, it requires no upkeep.

Just like with anything else in life, if you don’t take care of your stainless steel, it oxidates.

In order to make sure your stainless steel looks great for decades, you need to polish it with a special compound. If you’re living at the coast, applying a coat every six months should be sufficient.

Do you work in other metals besides stainless steel and aluminium?

We work only with stainless steel and aluminium. The reason for this is simple: if you work with both stainless and normal metals, the stainless steel does not remain clean. If you use a grinding disc, for argument’s sake, on both mild steel and stainless steel, the stainless steel becomes contaminated. This means that your product won’t have the properties you originally required.

But don’t you work in any other metals at all?

Contact me with your customisation needs. I should be able to help.
